Alone?

March 6, 2018

Are we ever really alone? I guess my answer at this stage of my life is that we are alone only when we wish to be for whatever reason. During 19 days in March, I and my fellow Baha'is are in a Spiritual Fasting time when we are encouraged to purify our inner and outer lives with abstinence during the daylight hours. It is symbolic of a higher abstinence from the things of this world. We are encouraged to look at our coming year and find that which God would have us do during that time . One of the qualities that I am working on gaining within myself is the healthy vulnerability. That humility where we realize that we are all one and interdependent. Could God have created us that way? To need one another and correspondingly to serve one another?

With the abuse that I have endured throughout my life, you can imagine that this is a very difficult idea for me to consider. I am finally independent! However, when I was lying in that bed in that nursing home, my pride was holding on for dear life by not telling anyone how I was being treated, at least anyone that could or would assist me in getting justice. In those moments if I had seen that pride was in fact a veil between me in my situation and God with all His resources and answers, perhaps I would have found my voice to protect and care for myself earlier.

God is always with us but sometimes He is with us through the nearness of other of His people. We can be servants sent by Him to one another with out necessarily realizing it and without losing one iota of our dignity. There is dignity in the expression of vulnerability.

There is a caveat in all this. That is that we must be very careful with whom we choose to be vulnerable. When I have been in distress, it has not always been the best time for me to trust my inclinations so I relied on prayer. I asked God to lead me to someone that would not use my vulnerability to take advantage or play some other equally wasteful game with me and my issues. He has not failed me yet, when I have humbly gotten out of the way.

Here at CHAT, we will never take advantage of the situations that we all find ourselves in occasionally. We are listening and very ready to serve you in a variety of ways. We will also admit when we are unable to assist you and direct you to someone that can. We will be your voice!
